RESUMO

Background@#Although the field of psychology currently recommends trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy for early psychological intervention for acute traumatic stress, additional research is required for safe and efficient psychotherapy that can delivered to a broader population and within a brief period of time. @*Methods@#This pilot study examined the safety and feasibility of a single-session group stabilization intervention for individuals conducted at an average of two weeks after various types of traumatic events. Further development of DSM-5 mental disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and others, was assessed at the six-month follow-up. A total of 38 participants with acute stress symptoms participated in a single-session 90-minute group psychotherapy, which consists of psychoeducation; identification of and coping with triggers; somatosensory grounding; and containment exercise. @*Results@#After six months, follow-up was conducted on 34 (89.5%) patients, who completed the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Mental Disorders and the PTSD Checklist-5. One (2.9%) participant met the current diagnosis of PTSD, whereas none met any other psychiatric diagnoses. A significant decrease was noted in PTSD scores between baseline and follow-up (t=7.4, df=33, p<0.001, Cohen’s d=1.27) measured using the PTSD Checklist-5. @*Conclusion@#The finding suggests that a single stabilization session can be used in a safe and efficient manner at of the acute stage of trauma.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to understand sexual knowledge, sexual attitudes, and the perceptions and actualities of sex education among parents of elementary school children. METHODS: This is a descriptive study with a sample size of 337. SPSS version 21.0 was used for data analysis, including descriptive analyses, the t-test, and Pearson correlation analysis. RESULTS: More than 50% of the participants responded that primary sex education for young children should be the responsibility of the parents and that education should be stared during the elementary school period. A moderate correlation was found between parents' sexual knowledge and sexual attitudes (r=.44). Most parents were afraid to provide sex education because of their unfamiliarity with teaching methods and their lack of knowledge. However, 50 of the parents wanted to receive sex-related education. CONCLUSION: We found that parents would like to learn more about sex education from expert lectures or professional organizations. They were interested in topics including the sexual structure of males/females and sexual physiology. Open communication between parents and their children regarding sex-related issues is important. It is crucial to provide accurate and up-to-date sex education information to parents so that they can effectively teach their children at home.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Children are sedated before undergoing diagnostic imaging tests in emergency medicine or pediatric sedation anesthesia units. The aim of this study was to identify variables potentially affecting the dose of ketamine required for induction of sedation in pediatric patients undergoing diagnostic imaging.METHODS: This retrospective study included children aged 0 to 18 years who underwent sedation with ketamine for computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging in the pediatric sedation anesthesia unit of a tertiary medical center between January 2011 and August 2016. The children’s hemodynamic status and depth of sedation were monitored during the examination. We recorded data on demographics, categories of imaging tests, ketamine doses administered, adverse events, respiratory interventions, and duration of sedation. Data for patients who experienced adverse events were excluded.RESULTS: Sixty-six patients were included in the final analysis. Univariate linear regression analysis revealed that patient age, height, and body surface area (BSA) affected the sedative dose of ketamine administered. These three variables showed multicollinearity in multivariate linear regression analysis and were analyzed in three separate models. The model with the highest adjusted R-squared value suggested the following equation for determination of the dose of ketamine required to induce sedation: ketamine dose (mg)=-1.62+0.7×age (months)+36.36×BSA (m²).CONCLUSION: Variables such as age and BSA should be considered when estimating the dose of ketamine required for induction of sedation in pediatric patients.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate parents' perception and behaviors in the case of a child safety accident. METHODS: The participants were 254 parents of children under 12 years old. Data were collected from October 12 to November 25, 2016 using self-report questionnaire. RESULTS: The mean score for parental perception and behaviors showed a high score of 3.12±0.30. In addition, the top three categories were drug management (3.45±0.54), prevention of burns (3.34±0.52), and vehicle safety (3.34±0.44). The overall difference in categories of perception and behaviors about child safety accidents according to demographic characteristics of participants, was developmental age (F=5.616, p=.004). Most of the categories had significant correlation with other categories. CONCLUSION: Findings in this study show parental perception and behaviors were relatively high. It is recommended that safety education for parents should be done for a healthy life for their children.

RESUMO

Ergonovine have been used for the prevention and treatment of postpartum or postabortion hemorrhage. Although this modality has been considered relatively safe in the obstetric patients, there were a few cardiac events associated with this drug in the post-delivery or post-abortion patients, especially in patients with cardiovascular risk factors. We experienced cardiac arrest in a non-parturient with no discernible risk factors. Although resuscitated, she also suffered from pulmonary edema with unstable hemodynamics and low oxygenation. To manage the patient, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was used and she recovered successfully without cardiopulmonary complications. Therefore, we recommend that when ergonovine is chosen as a modality, special caution should be paid to the pulmonary events, as well as cardiac, especially when administered by intravenously even in patients with no cardiovascular risk factors. If cardiac events occur, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation or other measures, such as intra-aortic balloon pump can be helpful when conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation is not effective.

RESUMO

Cystic lymphangioma is a relatively rare congenital malformation of the lymphatic system. It is very rare that retroperitoneal cystic lymphangioma was detected by prenatal ultrasonography. There has been no case reported that scrotal cystic lymphangioma was detected by prenatal ultrasonography. We detected a cystic structure with multiseptation in the scrotum at 30 weeks gestation. In addition, we detected the same structure in the retroperitoneum at 35 weeks gestation by routine ultrasonography. Because of increasing size of the cyst, we performed induction delivery at 38 weeks gestation. Operation of the neonate was performed on the 13th day after birth by a pediatric surgeon and the mass was excised and confirmed as cystic lymphangioma. We experienced a case of huge cystic lymphangioma of the retroperitoneum and scrotum by prenatal sonography and report our case with a brief review of literature.
